Assessor Recruitment
The College provides pre-registration assessment for graduate optometrists. Through the Scheme for Registration, continuous assessment of trainees is carried out in the workplace by qualified optometrists, trained and approved by the College to be assessors.
To maintain good assessment practice, the assessors and their work are subject to a process of quality assurance carried out by senior assessors.
Assessors
Assessors assess the trainees in the workplace by examining evidence (such as log books, witness testimonies and patient records), and by observing whilst the trainee examines patients.
Assessors are required to provide feedback to the trainee and their supervisor, agree action plans and to complete an on-line report about the trainee’s performance.
Over 100 assessors are already working within the Scheme. Because of increased trainee numbers we now require more assessors to join the team in 2020.
To be an assessor you must be able to commit to a tight timescale of visits and be based within the United Kingdom. Assessors will be required to commit to 5 trainees allowing at least 3.5 days for every trainee. Assessors will receive a fee of £35.38 per hour.
Assessors must already be experienced supervisors and/or Scheme for Registration OSCE examiners. Supervisors must have supported at least 3 pre registration trainees as a principal or joint supervisor with at least one trainee to have completed the scheme within the last 3 years. They must also be able to show evidence of continuous professional development and be a member of the College of Optometrists. Experience in competency based assessment is an advantage. Training and support will be provided by the College of Optometrists.
Broadband email access is essential.
We particularly require more Assessors in Scotland, Surrey, South Wales, South England and Greater London. We do not require any assessors in Northern Ireland or Greater Manchester.
