Eight weeks FTC commencing not earlier that November 2018

If you can provide specialist ophthalmology medical treatment and surgery, your costed proposal (maximum of £26k) and expression of interest is invited to bring your specialist skills to an island community.

A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,500, St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK. It’s now poised for transformation with the recent opening of a brand new international airport offering scheduled commercial air access.

You will give valuable support and advice on ophthalmology care to the medical team and offer training to relevant staff in the latest clinical issues. Advising and guiding clinical staff on improving their professional skills and care you will conduct at least one training session per week. You must review literature on ophthalmology in Medical and Nursing Libraries and propose new texts/journals to be procured and any equipment which the Health Directorate should consider acquiring. You will also review and advise on pharmaceuticals and consumables most appropriate for ophthalmology patients.

Reviewing retinal photographs and referral patterns for ophthalmology cases over the past three years, you will advise on emergency distant support requirements and referral criteria. You will assess and treat cases by medical or surgical means with appropriate follow-up care.

With your input, the SMO will prepare and share with you a list of referred patients in advance to ensure that pharmaceuticals/supplies required can be arranged in time for the visit; appointments for all referred patients will be made in advance.

As a fully qualified ophthalmologist with substantial post-registration experience, you should be able to treat and operate majority of patients with the equipment and facilities available on island. Within six weeks of departure you must submit a report on progress against key indicators

Travel to and from St Helena will be funded by SHG.  Further information can be found at or contact Kedell Worboys on 0203 818 7610. Please submit a fully costed proposal and CV to by 26 July 2018.
