Our new normal: Remote training for new starters

It is safe to say that 2020 has been a weird year. The pandemic has hit everyone in one way, or another and companies have had to re-think how they work, how they manage and how they train.

Starting a journey with our team at OutsideClinic may look a little bit different, but our end-goal remains the same – to deliver quality eye care to those in need.

With new measures in place to ensure the safest environment possible, we continue to provide quality training, bespoke equipment and an improved work-life balance for all our optometrists.

Now being able to train and work from home, have weekends off, and access to all the necessary safety equipment - you could enjoy a fulfilling career helping those in need whilst also balancing a healthy home life.

When starting a career with us, you will spend one day in our head office to collect your company car, equipment and meet some of your colleagues including your regional trainer – all done in a safe and socially distanced way of course.

You will then spend a couple of days training at home with your allocated trainer over a Zoom call. It will include training on our bespoke tablet, EYEris – so there will be no more paper records for you.

Once the home training is complete, you will head out to some local appointments and complete eye tests with your regional trainer observing via the use of a smartphone and camera tripod from their vehicle. They will provide you with feedback before proceeding onto the next visit with you.

Once confident, your trainer will observe appointments remotely to ensure you are fully comfortable to work independently in the home visiting environment. Your regional trainer will always be available should you need anything, along with our support teams in our head office.

We provide all necessary personal protection equipment (PPE), and we have also invested in new technology including the Welch Allyn PanOptic indirect ophthalmoscope providing a greater working distance and greater field of view than traditional direct ophthalmoscopes. This in addition with our brand-new bespoke breath shields offers increased protection for our patients and optometrists.

Keep an eye out on our future articles coming soon when we chat to one of our newest starters on her experience starting a job after lockdown. We also speak with one of our current optometrists about his creation of our bespoke breath shield – Coming soon.
